Whitby man charged in bank robbery, QSS shooting

A Whitby area man faces charges in connection with a bank robbery in Belleville that may have involved a gun being fired at Quinte Secondary School.

Belleville Inspector Mike Callahan announced Thursday afternoon that charges were laid in Toronto following a multi-jurisdictional investigation that involved Belleville Police, Cobourg Police, Toronto Police, York Regional Police and Halton Regional Police.

Zak Bayfield, 40, faces more than 30 charges from other regions as well as six charges from Belleville in relation to the robbery of the Royal Bank on March 10.

Prior to that robbery, a gun was fired in Quinte Secondary School. Police said at the time they believed the incident at QSS was related to the robbery.

Callahan said during the arrest of Bayfield, firearms were found and seized in his residence. Bayfield appeared in a Toronto court Thursday.

Callahan said aside from the crime committed in Belleville, police have found no local connection between Bayfield and the area. Further, police are still looking into whether a second suspect might be involved.

“There is a lot of investigation still being done in relationship to this individual’s background, who he is and where he has been historically,” Callahan said in a media conference Tuesday.

“I think the approach and the response from the Belleville Police Service was … was very thorough, as was the investigation, and working with our partners at the school board and our community partners to solve this investigation and here I am today able to announce and individual has been incarcerated and I think that is a significant step.”

Callahan thanked all the people who phoned in to the tip line to help with the investigation.

Callahan said police will charge Bayfield with robbery with a firearm; use of a firearm in commission of an offence; pointing a firearm; discharge a weapon with intent; carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He said Bayfield will at some point appear in Belleville court on the local charges, but whether those charges are prosecuted locally or jointly in Toronto is up to the Crown attorneys.
