In 1752, John Bushell began publishing Canada’s first regular newspaper, the Halifax Gazette.  The 2-sided paper contained public notices, ads from booksellers and wholesalers, notices about slave auctions, poems and elegies, and excerpts from notable publications. Today's successor newspaper, the Halifax Chronicle-Herald, is the oldest existing newspaper in North America. 

In 1903, the Wright Brothers filed a patent for a flying machine, which is granted 3 years later.

In 1945, U.S. Navy ships bomb the Japanese Island of Okinawa, in preparation for the Allied invasion; and would become the largest battle of the Pacific War in World War II.

In 1976, Labatt Brewing Company acquires the rights to a new American League Baseball franchise in Toronto to be called the “Blue Jays”; begins play in the 1977 season on April 7, 1977, against the Chicago White Sox, before a home crowd of 44,649; pro baseball’s second Canadian team after the NL Montreal Expos.

In 1991, Elton John joined George Michael on stage in London for a duet on the 1974 hit "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". The 'live' version will be released as a single and would top the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Michael donated $500,000 from the royalties to various charities. 

In 2011, Suncor Energy shovel operator discovers bones believed to be of the Ankylosaur group of dinosaurs from around 110 million years ago, at an oil sands mine north of Fort McMurray. 

 

It is ‘Puppy Day’ – According to daysoftheyear.com, Puppy Day was established to bring awareness about puppy mills and how to go about adopting. Puppy mills are often some of the most horrible establishments, with the females bred until they either can’t conceive, or die giving birth.
