After storming back in the third period for a come-from-behind win Wednesday, the Belleville Senators went in the opposite direction Friday.
The Sens fell apart in the third period against the Manitoba Moose, giving up four goals in a 7-3 loss in front of 3,356 fans at the Yardmen Arena on Teddy Bear Toss day.
The outburst broke open a 3-3 tie and reversed the momentum the Senators had built up with a late flurry of goals in the second period.
Filip Chlapik with his sixth of the season and Max McCormick with his fourth of the year scored nine seconds apart late in the second period to restore hope for the crowd, pulling the home team even.
Gabriel Gagne, with his team leading 11th goal, opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the game from Chris DiDomenico and Erik Burgdoerfer to get the Sens started.
But the Moose scored twice in the first period and again in the second before Belleville staged its comeback late in the second frame.
But it all went for nothing as the wheels fell off in the third period.
The Moose scored four times before the halfway point in the frame peppering Andrew Hammond with 12 shots on net while the Sens could only manage four at the other end.
Hammond finished the game with 26 saves on 33 shots to fall to 6-3-2.
The loss dropped the Sens record to 11-13-0-3 and with Utica’s 2-1 win over Binghamton dropped Belleville to sixth place in the North Division.
The Moose, now unbeaten in 12 straight games (11-0-0-1), lead the Western Conference with a record of 19-5-1-2.
The Senators return to Binghamton on Saturday to take on the Devils. They then take on the Americans in Rochester on Wednesday and return to the Yardmen Arena against the Syracuse Crunch on Friday.
NOTES: Gagne’s goal gives him the team lead in goals and puts him second in scoring with 14 points, one behind Chlapik (6 goals, 9 assists). Jim O’Brien also has 14 points as well (7-7). Ethan Werek (6,7) and McCormick (4,9) have 13 points each.
The loss was the first time this season the Sens were beaten when Ben Harpur was in the lineup. Belleville had been 5-0 in games the defenceman was not called up to Ottawa.
