Belleville residents with a sweet tooth, or who just like fresh-baked treats, have a new place to indulge their passions.

Sugar Mama’s Bake Shoppe Inc held its grand opening Thursday at 144 North Front Street, the corner of College and N. Front Street in Belleville.

Mayor Mitch Panciuk and members of city council, as well as MPP Todd Smith’s wife Tanya, a representative of MP Neil Ellis’ office and representatives of Trenval and the Belleville Chamber of Commerce all took part in a ribbon cutting for the event.

Sugar Mama’s is the “sweet dream” of the daughter and mother team of Krysten Trenholm and Joanne Trenholm.

Krysten, the baker in the family, honed her skills in Peterborough and is excited to continue the family tradition of European traditional baking from scratch. Hand-rolled doughnuts are a current favourite of Sugar Mama’s patrons.

Joanne, whose retirement after 30 years in the workforce was short-lived, takes care of frontline operations which often includes helping patrons choose from a variety of cupcakes, cakes and other assorted baked goods.

During the grand opening, Krysten thanked everyone who had attended, noting the bake shop was a “labour of love.”

“This is a dream, and we are living the dream,” she said, to which Joanne chimed in, “And it’s a sweet one!”

For the grand offering Sugar Mama’s offered special deals and grand opening treats with many things in the shop going for $2. A percentage of all earnings from the day are being donated to The Grace Inn Homeless Shelter in Belleville.

Besides just offering baked goods, Sugar Mama’s has a breakfast and lunch service – both dining in and taking out – and their choices include KETO and other special dietary requirement orders.

They also offer wedding and birthday packages and special orders.

Sugar Mama’s is open Tuesday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
