Curlers in Stirling-Rawdon Township are getting an upgrade thanks to the federal government.

Mike Bossio, MP Hastings—Lennox & Addington, announced the Stirling Curling Club is receiving $21, 971 through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).

The Club will use the funding to install a closed circuit camera system, and will also add cupboards and a door to help maintain social activities for seniors both on and off the ice.

“Stirling Curling Club is primarily made up of senior curlers,” Debbie Holmes, treasurer of the Stirling Curling Club. “The new equipment and changes we are making will enable our members to curl longer, be safer, and be able to enjoy watching other curlers play.”

Holmes noted that non-profit organizations like the club rely on the assistance of grant like this one to keep operating.

“This funding will allow our seniors to continue curling well into their later years, and will help them stay active and engaged in our community,” she said.

The Government of Canada is providing approximately $35 million in New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) funding for close to 1,850 community-based projects approved through the NHSP 2016–2017 Call for Proposals.

Since 2004, the NHSP has funded close to 19,700 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada, with a total Government of Canada investment of approximately $417 million.

“I am thrilled that the Stirling Curling Club is receiving funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program,” Bossio said. “Community spaces like the Stirling Curling Club help our seniors lead an active, healthy, and well-balanced life-style.

“I am confident that curlers of all ages in the Stirling-Rawdon Township will benefit from these upgrades.”
