A veteran special constable in the city of Belleville is being commended for his exemplary service, professionalism, dedication and steadfast kindness.
At the police board meeting on Thursday, police chief Mike Callaghan commended Special Constable Harry Burley for distinguishing himself as a true ambassador of the Belleville Police Service for the past 20 years.
He said Burley is quite often the first person a member of the public deals with when they enter the police station or by phone and has an innate ability to calm distraught people down.
“Harry is a goodwill ambassador for the public,” Callaghan said. “I have heard people screaming and yelling over the phone. He has an incredible calming effect on people, and he has that innate ability to evaluate the situation and provide very savoury advice to the individuals.”
Callaghan said It is not uncommon for him to get a phone call or email from people thanking their service for the work that Burley does behind the scenes including taking the opportunity to call people back after he has spoken with them to ensure they are doing well.
Callaghan said that is the work needed to ensure the service is building trust within the community.
“Harry if it were not for your hard work, professionalism or dedication and determination in the current position you hold with the service, our service would not run as sufficiently as it does with you at the helm of the front desk,” he said.
The police chief added Burley often dedicates his spare time to volunteer at the police functions and is part of the Ceremonial Honor Guard Team.
Police Board Chair Jack Miller called Burley one of the most pleasant, congenial person anyone will ever meet.
“When you talk about customer service, I can’t think of anyone that can tolerate the way you can just to make it as pleasant for the people who rely on us to provide the services that we do,” he said speaking directly to Burley. “You’re a credit to the Belleville Police Service.”
Burley stated all he ever wanted was to be the best special constable the service could have.
“I love this service,” he said. “I love coming to work everyday and I can’t foresee not coming to work. This is the best place in the world to work. Everybody is absolutely fantastic.”
