Six Quinte players make world floorball team

Quinte will be well represented at the U19 World Floorball championships at the Quinte Sport and Wellness Centre this May.

Six area players – three from Belleville, and one each from Foxboro, Trenton and Tyendinaga – made the final 26 player roster and reserves for the event that kicks off May 4.

The team was announced Wednesday night at Boston Pizza.

Leading the local crew is team captain Hannah Wilson. She is joined by Alexa Hoskin and Lily Greaves from Belleville, goalie Lily Messier from Foxboro, forward Emily Lange from Trenton and goalie Madi Brinklow from Tyendinaga.

Head coach Todd Crawford from Belleville said this year’s squad is the best Canada has ever sent to an under-19 world championship.

“We have assembled the best possible team we could ever have,” Crawford said. “We have more depth, we have better goaltending, we have more depth in scoring, our defence is phenomenal.

“Our defence are fearless, they work really well together as a five-person unit. We have strengths all throughout the lineup.”

Besides the Quinte area crew, Canada’s lineup features a few close neighbours as well: Olivia DiVona and Aislyn Stretch from Port Hope and Dara Killoran from Cobourg made the team as well.

The team also features one player, Sara Fucile, from Thunder Bay, one from Grafton, a pair from Ohsweken, two from Stoney Creek, five from Markham and six from Hamilton.

Canada plays its opening game is against Japan on May 4 at 11 a.m. and the game is already sold old.

Crawford said playing against a large hometown crowd should also be a huge help for Canada kicking off the tournament.

“The girls are ready to go. They were ready to play yesterday,” he said. “I think 3,500 people in an arena will be a shock for a lot of people but I think our girls will be able to handle it.”
