UPDATE: After the initial cancellation of the RCAF flyovers, including the Highway of Heroes flypast over the Quinte region, 8 Wing CFB announced on Wednesday afternoon they will go ahead after all.
Officials stated the cancellation was due to inclement weather Wednesday morning, but then improved and all flypasts, with the exception of the CF-18 Hornets, they conducated their planned routes, although the timings shifted.
This adaptability to changing circumstances is a key part of the RCAF’s ability to deliver Air Power. To watch a video from inside a CC-130J Hercules that flew today as part of RemembranceDay Flypasts, click here.
As Canadians are being encouraged to stay home this morning while they mark the service and sacrifice of those who have given their lives to defend the country, members of 8-Wing CFB Trenton will be conducting a flyby to mark Remembrance Day.
The Royal Canadian Air Force says three CC-130J Hercules aircraft, from 436 Transport Squadron at 8 Wing/Canadian Forces Base Trenton, will conduct a flyby over the Highway of Heroes from Trenton to Toronto at approximately 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.
Part of the 401 Highway connecting CFB Trenton and the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto is called the Highway of Heroes in honor of the Canadian Armed Forces members who made the ultimate sacrifice to support military operations.
“Flybys by the Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft are carefully planned, closely controlled, and deliberately executed for public safety and are dependent upon weather,” said Colonel Ryan Deming, Commander, 8 Wing/CFB Trenton.
“This year instead of gathering for a ceremony, we encourage you to stay home and take a moment at 11 a.m. to stand proudly on your front step and salute the brave Canadians who fought selflessly to achieve peace.”
Every year on Remembrance Day, 8 Wing CFB Trenton honours the service and sacrifice of Canadian Armed Forces Veterans who served their country at home and abroad.
“Regardless of where or when, our veterans fought to maintain the freedoms we enjoy today, to bring peace and security around the world, and to ensure a better future for our children and grandchildren," he said.
“This is our history, and it is our responsibility to remember the achievements and sacrifices of all our veterans, regardless of race or gender. We must pass on their legacy and keep the torch of remembrance burning for future generations. I am incredibly proud of the members of 8 Wing and Canadian Forces Base Trenton who continue to demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism and dedication to service before self."The Royal Canadian Legion is explicitly discouraging Canadians from attending Remembrance Day ceremonies in person this year and is instead asking people to watch on TV or online.
The local legions and municipal leaders have followed and scaled-down ceremonies will be aired on YourTV.
The legion is promising to include many of the traditional elements of the ceremonies, such as the playing of the Last Post and the singing of In Flanders Fields.
There will also be a special emphasis on the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War after many commemorations planned for earlier this year in Europe and elsewhere were cancelled because of the pandemic.
