A graduate of Quinte Christian High School has been named outstanding athlete from the city of Belleville this year.

Blake Scheerhoorn, currently a member Canada’s national volleyball team, was named winner of the Robinson-Kelleher Memorial Award at the 2016 City of Belleville annual Honours and Awards Ceremony.

He was one of 21 individuals and four teams honoured at the event. All those recognized by awards had won provincial championships or competed at the national and world level.

Scheerhoorn has twice led his Trinity Western University Spartans to CIS national men’s volleyball championships, including earning tournament MVP honours in 2016 when his squad upset host McMaster. He was named a tournament All Star in both 2016 and 2017.

Other individuals recognized Wednesday night were: Trampoline & Tumbling – gymnasts Hudson Mulvihill, Nevin Valcamp, Jennie Reilly (C) and Madelyn McEwen (C); speed skater Paul Pickard;

Swimmers Nickolas Cinnamon, Jackson Bonn and Brandon Oates (C); and gymnasts Katharine Herron, Grace Vandervelde, and Debbie Clare (C).

Also honoured were members of the Canadian World Floorball championship team Hannah Wilson (Captain), Madison Brinklow, Alexa Hoskin, Emily Lange, Olivia Greaves, Lily Messier, Brett Davis (GM), Todd Crawford (HC) and Greg Conway (AC).

Four teams were also recognized.
