Police are advising residents throughout the Quinte Area and most of Ontario lakes and other bodies of water are still unsafe to be venturing out on.
Constable Dave Coles of the OPP Central Region Snow Vehicle, ATV and Vessel Enforcement Unit said the weather hasn't been cold enough yet for a thick layer of ice to form, and people easily fall through.
He says once in the frigid water, they can suffer severe hypothermia.
Constable Coles said it's important to always be safe around water, ponds, streams and rivers, especially at this time of year.
