The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has laid more than 100 against moose hunters over a nine-day period in southeastern Ontario.

The ministry says conservation officers checked almost 4,000 hunters in the Bancroft, Parry Sound and Pembroke areas between Oct. 20 and 28, looking for compliance with the Fish And Wildlife Conservation Act and associated regulations.

They paid particular attention to hunter safety and moose sustainability issues, and 107 charges and 232 warnings were issued for over a dozen offences,  including shooting from, along or across a road, having a loaded firearm in a vehicle, night-hunting, not wearing proper hunter orange and trespassing for the purpose of hunting.

Officers also seized 33 moose that were harvested illegally, as well as two firearms, and 17 investigations are ongoing related to hunter safety, moose sustainability, and chronic wasting disease.
