Wednesday was a special day at Belleville General Hospital, as they held a ceremony to officially open the new expansion of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU), located at Belleville General Hospital (BGH) is a regional critical care unit that provides care to the sickest patients served by Quinte Health hospitals.
On Wednesday, Foundation partners, Patient Experience Partners, and representatives from MPP Todd Smith’s office joined the ICU team and Quinte Health leaders to officially mark the opening of the expanded ICU.
The space has been expanded to accommodate three more patients in the unit.
The remarkable ICU team, comprised of staff, physicians, and volunteers, has been extending care to an increased number of patients without adequate space, resulting in the need for a satellite unit over the past couple of years.
This much-needed expansion means all ICU patients can be cared for in one expanded ICU—which is preferred for continuity and a team approach to care.
The interprofessional ICU team cares for adult patients, with a large focus on respiratory support.
During the height of the pandemic, the ICU cared for a high volume of patients, most requiring some degree of life-support intervention. During this time, the ICU team’s compassion never wavered, and they remained resilient and took great care of their patients and each other—all in the midst of a big renovation. The Quinte Health team is enormously grateful to the donors from across our region investing in this much‐needed expansion that supports care across the areas served by Quinte Health hospitals—including the donors contributing to Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation, Belleville General Hospital Foundation, Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation, North Hastings Fund Development Committee, and the Parrott Foundation. They are also grateful to the provincial government for supporting ICU care in our region.
“I’m proud our government invested $4.3 million in one‐time capital funding to support the delivery of critical care services at Quinte Health. This expansion means that more patients will receive the care they need faster and closer to home. This funding is vital, not just for our local hospital but for our community. I am confident that this investment, in addition to the work we are doing to recruit and train more doctors, nurses, personal support workers, will mean better care for everyone across the Bay of Quinte. – Todd Smith, MPP, Bay of Quinte
