Several local rugby players were named to conference and provincial All-Star teams in their various regions as the 2021 university and college seasons wrapped up earlier this month with provincial and national championships.

• Ontario

Belleville’s Tia Svoboda of the McMaster University Marauders women’s team was named an OUA (Ontario University Athletics) All-Star at lock. The graduate of Centennial Secondary School, who is studying Commerce at McMaster, was also an Academic All-Canadian selection.

Kennedy Feasby of the University of Guelph Gryphons was named an OUA All-Star at flanker. Feasby, of Port Perry, is the daughter of Belleville native Melanie (Hurst) Feasby and former OHL Belleville Bulls defenceman Scott Feasby.

• Quebec

Moira Secondary School graduate James Flemming of the University of Ottawa Gee Gees was selected to the RSEQ (Quebec Universities) Conference All-Star Team at wing.

• Atlantic

A pair of former Trenton Tigers were named to Atlantic University Sports (AUS) All-Star Teams from the Acadia University Axewomen — prop forward Taryn McLachlan and centre Emilie Merilainen, both of Batawa.

• Ontario Colleges

Trenton’s Sam Meindl made an immediate impact at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, leading the Surge to the OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) men’s title in his rookie season at scrum half. Meindl led the OCAA men’s league in scoring during the regular season with 21 points, then accounted for eight points (two penalty kicks, one convert) in SLK’s 13-7 win over the Barrie Georgian Grizzlies in the provincial gold-medal match.
