The Trenton Golden Hawks fired 59 shots on the St. Michael’s Buzzers net, but it took until their last one to decide Friday night’s home and season opener.
Matt Cato ripped a pass from Nathan Oickle in the midst of a scramble to send Trenton fans home happy with a 2-1 double overtime victory.
It was looking like Trenton would not find any holes on Buzzers netminder Matthew Perdue, who was brilliant in stymieing the hosts’ offensive attack through the first two frames.
Belleville’s Ethan Fraser was steady down at the other end, but nerves were frayed when St. Mike’s bulged the twine for a powerplay goal courtesy of Nicholas Primomo with 9:07 left in the third.
Perdue’s shutout bid was foiled with under three minutes left however, thanks to a seeing-eye wrist shot from Oickle through a screen pitched in front.
Recently-named captain Mitch Lafay and Jordan Fuller drew the assists on the Peterborough native’s first of the year.
After a tightly contested first overtime period went away with nothing decided, assistant captain Cato came through with his overtime heroics at 2:08 from Oickle and Stephan McDonald.
The G-Hawks got the win, but Perdue got the laurels in his 57-save gem. Fraser made 21 saves at the other end for his first victory in net for Trenton.
The G-Hawks stay home on Sunday for a date with the Lindsay Muskies at 7:30 p.m.
