It's a fun event where the sport is secondary to the fundraising.
The Quinte Curling Club in Belleville was the site where twelve teams participated in the 14th Annual Rotary Club of Quinte Sunrise Curl 4 Kids event on Saturday.
Four teams of at least four people took to two sheets as the event got underway.
A small crowd gathered together to watch two of the teams curl for a good cause.
The event was originally 'Curl For Cancer' in its infancy, and then 'Curl For Camp Trillium' and over the years it raised over $100,000 for Camp Trillium.
Two years ago, the Rotary Club of Quinte Sunrise decided to expand the horizon of the event and rebrand 'Curl 4 Kids'.
Rotary spokesperson Geoff Cudmore talked about why he got involved.
"It's sort of one of our marquee events in the year and so I'm happy to support it."
Cudmore talked about one of the recipients of the monies raised from Curl 4 Kids -- the Rotary Quinte Sunrise Bayside Secondary Scholarship -- money that goes towards a student's further education.
"It comes in two installments. They get one installment when they finish their first semester and they come and talk to the club about their experience and then one at the end of the first year. They have to be studying, they have to be successful.", said Cudmore.
This year, monies raised will also go to Camp Trillium, the Field Of Ability Project and Quinte SailAbility.
The 2018 edition of Curl 4 Kids raised just over $4,000 for various charitable groups.
Among the list of charities receiving support from Curl 4 Kids in the past were Adventures in Citizenship, Shelter Box and Water Projects and Maternal Health.
Cudmore said even though the event has grown a lot over the years, the number of participating teams has fluctuated during that time.
"Last year, I think we only had eight teams and so it's come back a little bit, but we're grateful for everyone who comes out and supports us and thankful for the donations."
Saturday's turnout was expected to improve with twelve teams taking part.
Cudmore hoped that one day Curl 4 Kids will achieve a unique goal.
"My dream is that at some point, we'll have 24 teams out here for three full draws...but there's so much going on and it's hard to get as much participation in the community as you like."
