Prince Edward County will rename the Millennium Lookout in Picton in honour of former Mayor James Taylor on June 17.

Taylor the first mayor of the newly-amalgamated County and passed away in 2020 at the age of 92.

He took office in 1998 and served two terms before his retirement in 2003.  Before his time in municipal politics, Taylor was an MPP for the riding of Prince Edward Lennox from 1971 to 1987.  During that time Taylor served as the Minister of Community and Social Services from 1975-1977.  He then took over as Minister of Energy from 1977-1978.

Decorum, professionalism, listening to concerns and what the public had to say was exactly what Taylor lived by, former mayor Robert Quaiff recalled at the time of his passing.

"He was very stern at the head of the horseshoe, but on the side, he was a pure humanitarian," Quaiff said.

"He was a kind man and generous with his time sharing stories of his life in provincial politics and the early days of The County," Mayor Steve Ferguson said in a statement following Taylor's death.

The event will be held at the lookout on County Road 22 at 3 p.m.

It includes a plaque unveiling, remarks by Mayor  Steve Ferguson, Jim Taylor, other dignitaries, and a presentation to the Taylor family.
