Commander of CFB Trenton ready for Royals

The Commander of CFB Trenton says preparations are continuing, but the base is ready to receive the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Prince Charles and Camilla are arriving in Iqualuit on Thursday, with the stop at CFB Trenton to be the first of the day's scheduled events on Friday.

Colonel Colin Keiver says they have been very busy coordinating with a number of departments, but that everything looks good.

"We are honoured to be hosting the future King of England. This is our opportunity to show them a little bit of everything that the Wing does, and not just the Wing but the Canadian Armed Forces and Canadians in general."

The events at the base include a walk through hangar displays, a search and rescue (SAR) demonstration, and a stop at the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial.

"It's really about them interacting with the current members of the Canadian Armed Forces and then going out to the Memorial to honour the service of those who have gone before us."

The SAR demonstration also has great significance, though it was one of the more challenging elements to organize due to their high level of activity at this time of year.

"We are in the busy season for search and rescue," says Keiver. "We are averaging 2-3 callouts a day for the C-130 and the Gryphon." He says the majority of those calls are for boats having problems and other marine issues.

Once they wrap up the visit to the base, the Royal Couple will move on to the Wellington Farmer's Market and the Norman Hardie Winery in Prince Edward County before heading off to Ottawa for the Canada Day celebrations on Saturday.

Charles and Camilla are in Canada as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations.
