Aircraft from CFB Trenton continued to be used in the evacuation of an Indigenous community in Northwestern Ontario from a dangerous wildfire nearby.

The fire grew to about 36 square kilometres on Saturday, but favourable winds were keeping it away from the community.

The weather is also expected to change, with periods of rain and showers are expected both Monday and Tuesday.

Four Royal Canadian Air Force CC-130J Hercules aircraft were used to help evacuate about 640 people from the Pikangikum First Nation to Sioux Lookout and Kapuskasing, along with one CC-130H aircraft from 17 Wing Winnipeg.

Canadian Rangers also continued to provide support to the First Nation and the CC-130 Hercules crews.

About 15 hundred people have been evacuated from Pikangikum so far and evacuation efforts will continue on Sunday.
