Belleville Police are using a recent incident in the city to caution residents about reposting on social media.

Officers received a call from a parent on May 17 about "a suspicious vehicle" with two women inside, parked on an east end street near were children were playing.

Police found the vehicle and the people were spoken to, but their actions were innocent -- they had just happened to be stopped near the children.

The story has gained traction on social media to the point where other similar vehicles were photographed and posted warning people to be aware of the occupants and accusing them of trying to abduct children.

The Belleville Police always recommends parents watch their children and contact police if they see any suspicious activity.

However, if there is concern for safety or if a vehicle is being sought, police will request that assistance from the public through the media.
