The Belleville Cemetery is marking 150 years of operation with a special ceremony on Saturday.
Cemetery general manager Zack Thibaudeau said the ceremony, which starts at 11 a.m., will feature presentations from board president Dan Atkinson and local dignitaries.
They will highlight the history of the cemetery and what they are doing to make sure this 'pillar in the community' stays viable for the long term.
Following the ceremony, there will be guided tours that will highlight 12 historically significant people that are buried in the cemetery.
On the cemetery's website, it states the grounds on Dundas Street West is the resting place of Canada’s fifth Prime Minister Mackenzie Bowell, Canadian author Susanna Moodie and her husband, Dunbar Moodie, the first Sheriff of Hastings County, and an early pioneer in Deaf Education in Ontario – Samuel Thomas Greene, among many others.
With the help of the historical society, volunteers will be dressed as said individuals to tell their story.
Afterwards, attendees can enjoy some light refreshments.
