SENIOR HOCKEY: Brown fires five for Bulldogs

By Paul Martin Nov 12, 2025 | 10:42 AM

Deseronto Bulldogs forward Luc Brown is no stranger to scoring goals.

He fired 42 in his final season of Jr. A with the Wellington Dukes before going on to play NCAA Div 1 in the U.S. and four years of minor pro. Last season, his first with the Sr. A Bulldogs, Brown tallied 16 times in 16 games.

The Quinte Red Devils graduate topped that pace in a Northern Premier Hockey League game last weekend, scoring five goals — including a natural hat trick — to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-5 road victory over the Durham Hawks. Brown scored three consecutive times in the first period, then added a single marker in each of the second and third frames.

BULLDOGS 9, HAWKS 5

Deseronto commanded a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes and never looked back en route to the Bulldogs’ second straight win of the weekend. Jonny Hill, Noah Brant, Mitch Gustavsen and Will Harrison counted the other Deseronto goals while Dorian Overland picked up three assists. Outshot 54-48 by the hometown Hawks, Deseronto got some outstanding goaltending from Corey Kuypers who posted 49 saves for the victory.

Former NHLer Bryan Bickell (Chicago, Carolina) led Durham with two goals and two assists.

BULLDOGS 6, BARNCATS 4

A day earlier, playing on home ice, Bulldogs used a big 3-0 second period to tame the Lindsay Barncats 6-4. Former Belleville Bull Jason Shaw (2), Ben Carter, Nathan Hudgin, Ryan Verbeek and Jonny Hill supplied the Deseronto goals while Greg Arnburg earned three helpers. The two teams combined for 103 shots on goal (Deseronto 61, Lindsay 42) with Aaron Young making 38 stops in the Bulldogs net.

Deseronto improves to 4-3-1 in second place in the four-team Highlands Division, one point behind Durham.

ON DECK: Tamworth at Deseronto, Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

OIL KINGS 7, SABRES 2

On the road at Tamworth, the Tweed Oil Kings led 5-0 in the second stanza before the hometown Sabres got on the board. Mitch Burke (2), Elijah Brahaney (2), Jacob Vreugdenhill, Dan Atkinson and former Belleville Bull Brody Morris scored for Tweed. Jakob Brahaney and Blaine Thompson each had two helpers.

Shots favoured the Oil Kings, 52-42, with Evan Morrison registering a 40-save W in goal for Tweed.

Kings climb into a second-place tie with the Westport Lumberjacks in the four-team Heritage Division, each with a 4-3 record. The Smiths Falls Rideaus (5-1) lead the group.

ON DECK: Tweed at Durham, Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

LUMBERJACKS 8, ROYALS 2

Justin Arnold and Calvin Wojtaszak had the only Prince Edward County goals as the hometown Westport Lumberjacks chopped down the Royals 8-2. Steven Tierney faced a whopping 75 shots in the PEC net while his teammates tested Leif Hertz 48 times in the Westport goal.

Royals are last in the Highlands Division at 1-5-1.

ON DECK: Lindsay at PEC, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (Wellington).
