There is renewed stability in the top post at the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board.

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce a new 5-year contract for Director of Education Katherine MacIver, effective September 1, 2025. It aligns with the launch of the new strategic plan and will ensure stable leadership to advance the HPEDSB priorities:

Strengthening Foundational and Real-World Skills

Advancing Indigenous Education and Reconciliation

Promoting Citizenship, Well-Being and Safe Environments

Fostering Critical Thinking, Adaptability and Innovation

This leadership decision reflects the Board’s commitment to its mission: We educate and empower students with skills for success and its vision: Inspiring and innovating for a bright future.

“We are pleased that Director MacIver accepted the contract offer for 2025-2030,” said Kari Kramp, Chair of the Board. “This decision, along with the approval of the 2025–2030 multi-year strategic plan and a balanced 2025–2026 budget—the third consecutive year—provides our school community with a strong foundation for the future. We look forward to seeing the progress and innovation at HPEDSB over the next five years!”

During the past four years MacIver has been recognized for her unwavering work ethic and the tireless dedication of her entire team in achieving results for students. Under her leadership HPEDSB has celebrated significant gains across key indicators of student success.

A renewed focus on the science of reading, championed by HPEDSB staff, has transformed classroom instruction and provided students with stronger foundational skills. This commitment to prioritizing student achievement has been at the heart of all initiatives, from navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to embracing innovation to prepare students for the future.

These efforts have translated into tangible results in our classrooms and beyond, showcasing the power of a collaborative and dedicated staff:

Significant increases in EQAO results, with a 6 percentage point boost in Grade 6 Math achievement and a 7 percentage point increase in OSSLT EQAO achievement.

A major jump in graduation rates, with a 6 percentage point increase in the 4-year rate (from 70.6 to 76.7%) and a 5 percentage point increase in the 5-year rate (from 76.3 to 81.4%).  These impressive gains are a testament to the collective effort of every staff member to support student success.

‘I’m grateful for the trust the Board has placed in me. It’s been an honour to serve the Board and the students, staff and families of HPEDSB,” said MacIver. “I’m especially proud of the work and passion of our incredible staff who have supported student achievement and wellbeing in our schools and communities. With the new strategic plan we are fully committed to fulfilling our vision of inspiring and innovating for bright futures.”
