Beyond the Headlines – generosity of Merrial Leslie

By Hailey MacDonald Oct 16, 2025 | 2:16 PM

A legacy gift is continuing a life-long commitment to support healthcare for one resident of Prince Edward County.

Merrial Leslie (like me) was born in Hamilton, Ontario. Later, in 1961, she and her husband Len found joy closer to home on Big Island in Demorestville and also connected with the local hospital in Picton.

For 26 years, she showed support for Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) Foundation, giving 30 gifts, often during the holiday season, to help purchase priority medical equipment.

Following her passing, Merrial’s kindness lives on, though a bequest through her estate of $100,000, a remarkably generous amount which serves as a testament to her appreciation for everyone at PECMH.

Shannon Coull, Executive director of the PECMH Foundation, said it best when she said “Investing in our hospital, especially through a legacy gift, allows Merrial to live on through her story of kindness and generosity,”

As work continues on the new building, excitement is also continuing to build for the bright new future that it will usher in with new technology, bright and inviting new spaces, enhanced infection control measures, and more modern medical suites.

What we must always remember is the effort and support it took to get to this moment. We owe great thanks to everyone working at the hospital in Picton and also all the people and organizations, like Merrial, who help purchase priority medical equipment.

It’s a legacy of giving and also life-saving that is well worth celebrating.
