Beyond the Headlines – Shannan Hickey Memorial Education Endowment

By Paul Martin Nov 26, 2025 | 10:35 AM

A legacy of learning is one always worth passing on to others.

A memorial fund has been created to recognize and honour a local nurse and encourage others to remember her through continued professional growth.

Quinte Health, in partnership with the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation, has established the Shannan Hickey Memorial Education Endowment, created in memory of Shannan Hickey, a beloved local nurse whose life was tragically taken by intimate partner violence.

With an initial investment of $265,000, including a $50,000 contribution from the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation, the fund is designed to provide ongoing support for Quinte Health staff pursuing educational and professional development opportunities.

Applications will be accepted annually with recipients announced each May by a committee which includes Shannan’s father Matthew Hickey.

I would like to thank everyone involved and especially Matthew for ensuring that Shannan’s legacy will live in on in those who wish to find new ways to help others as she did.

Matthew says, “Shannan was passionate about learning and about helping others grow.”

Thank you, Matthew, for turning tragedy into triumph and for ensuring that Shannan’s story will be defined by her bright and beautiful spirit, and not the person who took her from us.

I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
