Belleville to receive significant federal funding boost for housing

The City of Belleville is getting a significant federal funding boost for housing on Wednesday afternoon.

The Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, will join Mayor Neil Ellis at City Hall for the announcement.

While he preferred to keep the exact total under wraps until the announcement, the minister did say ‘millions of dollars are coming into Belleville to get more housing built.’

“This is good news for Belleville,” he said during interviews with Starboard Communications’ morning show hosts ahead of the big reveal.  “It is going to make a big difference.”

The funding is coming through the Housing Accelerator Fund which encourages and rewards municipalities that show ambition when it comes to getting housing built faster.

The minister said his government is investing $4.4 billion across the country over four years, ‘to help cut red tape and get more houses built.’

This second round of funding will see $120 million invested in Ontario municipalities and ‘Belleville will get its fair share,’ he said.

“Belleville qualified because they took actions to cut red tape to expedite permitting processes,” Erskine-Smith stated.  “We need all levels of government to pull every lever in their respective toolboxes to get more housing built to address the crisis that we all face.”

The announcement is happening at 2 p.m
