Belleville Sea Cadets seek help to repair training boats damaged by powerful windstorm

The Belleville Sea Cadets are seeking the public’s support after last week’s powerful storm damaged several of their training boats.

Maurene Czyczyro, chair of fundraising, Navy League Of Canada said the boats are essential for teaching youth nautical skills and sailing, making their loss a major setback.

“The strong winds lifted one boat and deposited it on top of two others nearly ten meters away, while another was thrown into a neighboring vessel,” Czyczyro described.

The damaged boats will be sent for assessment.

She said as a non-profit, they rely on community-based fundraising, and after spending last year to get our boats back in good sailing condition after the pandemic years, they were not prepared for the unexpected cost of repairing the boats.

“Your generosity will ensure that our cadets can continue their valuable on-water training,” Czyczyro stated. “While uniforms and course materials are provided by the Department of National Defense, all additional program needs—including the Cadet building, musical instruments, radio equipment, boats, and other essential resources—are funded by the Navy League of Canada – Belleville Branch.
