Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette has publicly thanked members of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue for their efforts to push for stronger security protections for faith communities.
Yesterday, Vice-President Shima Vigodda from the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville said that an existing federal program that helps places of worship improve their security was inadequate, and more expensive measures are necessary following the shooting on September 20th.
Vigodda says the fund is enough to pay for minor repairs and upgrades but isn’t nearly enough for things like installing bullet-resistant glass, a safe room, or fencing to slow possible attackers.
Malette says he was encouraged by meetings held yesterday involving members of the Synagogue and government officials as they discuss ways to improve safety for worshippers.
His complete statement is included below.
MESSAGE FROM MP CHRIS MALETTE ON FACEBOOK
Thank you to the survivors of the Yom Kippur shooting attack at Belleville’s Sons of Jacob Synagogue who travelled to Parliament Hill today to share their firsthand experiences and advocate for stronger protections for faith communities.
Joined by members of our government caucus, the Liberal Jewish Caucus, fellow MPs, Cabinet ministers and representatives from CIJA, they delivered a powerful reminder that Canada came dangerously close to a mass-casualty tragedy on September 20th.
Their courage and leadership are helping drive important conversations about combating antisemitism, countering radicalization and ensuring faith communities have the resources they need to stay safe.
Our government is listening.
Today’s moving and productive roundtable discussion reinforced the urgent need to protect faith communities across Canada. I am confident that we can strengthen our security systems, programs and legislation to address the growing and unprecedented threats facing Canadians of faith and ensure every community can worship in safety and security.
