UPDATE - severe thunderstorm watch cancelled
A severe thunderstorm watch which was issued for parts of the Quinte, Northumberland and surrounding regions on Thursday has been cancelled.
Environment Canada issued the special weather statement just shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The effected areas included: Belleville, Quinte West, Eastern Northumberland County, Cobourg, Colborne and Western Northumberland County.
The weather statement was also in effect for Kingston, Odessa, Frontenac Islands, Napanee, Consecon, Picton and Sandbanks Park.
Winds were very strong in many areas on Thursday, though many areas did not experience much in the way of rain. The advisory was issued as a precaution in case things took a turn for the worse.
Strong winds can cause damage to buildings, take down trees and blow unsecured items around. Environment Canada adds that severe thunderstorm conditions, in some cases, can produce the perfect conditions for a tornado.
Residents outside are asked to take shelter indoors if they get caught in such a storm, as lightning can also be a risk factor that can cause severe injury or death.
