CHEAP SEATS: Sens continue to win over Belleville

Any doubts about the excitement of area hockey fans for their soon-to-be Belleville Senators should be quieted, if not totally put to rest, after Tuesday afternoon.

Hundreds of fans filled the seats in the Mackay Insurance Arena, while hundreds more lined the glass or filled the halls or lined up for autographs for players most probably didn’t know – yet.

All for a practice. A short one at that.

But that didn’t matter. Because this was a chance for hockey fans to finally see the team they will call their own in a few months.

And the response from the team could not have been much better.

Putting aside the things you expect on this, it was the little things that showed how much this team wants to fit in here.

It was the players signing autograph after autograph, even those just mingling with the crowd.

It was team officials doing interviews, and more interviews, after they were all supposed to be done. It was all of them mingling with and talking to the crowd for basically as long as they could.

It was a team that seemed to understand what its new fans wanted, needed, and hoped for. And they did their best to provide it.

It could be the start of a beautiful friendship.
