CHEAP SEATS: Medigas Classic shows what a small group can do

The recognition by Belleville General Hospital of the contributions of the Medigas Celebrity Classic Golf tournament, is not only fitting but also provides a great reminder about what can be achieved when good people put their minds to helping others.

Last week, BGH officially opened the Medigas Celebrity Classic Pulmonary Function Test Room in recognition of the more than $200,000 the tournament has donated to the hospital over the years.

Often times such recognitions are given to worthy individuals or companies who have made such donations. Which is great.

But in this case, the Medigas tournament is mostly the work of a small group of dedicated people who at first just wanted to help one girl with special needs.

That grew to helping many children with special needs, then helping young people get educated in medical fields and helping people of all ages get better health care.

The former Rick Meagher tournament, which raised $13,000 in its first event 29 years ago, now hopes to end its run by raising $300,000 this year to reach $3 million total raised. All for this community.

That’s an achievement that’s well worth celebrating.
