Casino opens today

Casino opens today

A project more than a decade in the making will come to fruition Wednesday evening.

Shorelines Belleville casino will open its doors, complete with a formal ribbon cutting, at 4:50 p.m.

The variety of events associated with the opening ceremonies include a performance by local band Ambush. There will also be commemorative giveaways and promotions.

Local media and VIP dignitaries got a behind the scenes look at the Casino on Bell Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.
OLG spokesperson Tony Bitonti said the facility will also include a new Play Smart Centre, to help visitors gamble responsibly.

"This is a big brand new stand alone casino," Bitonti said. "It's the first time in 10 years. It's wonderful. Great Canadian has wonderful plans and we are very pleased and proud to be partnered with them.

"This is the first casino built by a private operator with private funds. All other casinos built in Ontario in thelast 10 to 15 years were built with public funds, with taxpayer money."

Debate on a casino in Belleville go back about 15 years and include and actual ground breaking across the street from where the casino now stands.

The current operators broke ground on the current building at 380 Bell Blvd. last spring, predicting the building would be open by spring 2017.

Craig DeMarta, vice president Operations East, Great Canadian Corporation, said the company is thrilled about the grand opening and "excited to showcase the best of entertainment, gaming and dining the Shorelines Casino brand will offer within the regional marketplace."

Great Canadian Gaming Corporation is a majority shareholder and lead operator of the Ontario Gaming East Limited Partnership.

Shorelines Casino Belleville will offer 450 interactive slot machines, popular table games such as blackjack, roulette, baccarat and others, along with premium dining options at the buffet and a full service restaurant. To complement the gaming experience, Shorelines Casino Belleville will also be home to an entertainment lounge that will boast the best in local music, comedy and more.

Shorelines Casino Belleville also features an innovative and interactive PlaySmart Centre, operated by the Responsible Gambling Council, an independent, non-profit organization committed to problem gambling prevention and awareness of responsible gambling practices.

Inquinte.ca will have extensive coverage of the grand opening starting this afternoon.
