Campbellford opens OFSAA playoffs March 21



The Campbellford Flames are back in unfamiliar territory, heading to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association hockey championships for the first time in a decade.

Campbellford earned the trip to Fort Frances with a 4-3 win in overtime over Centre Hastings in the COSSA Hockey Tournament in Campbellford.

It will be the Flames third time to OFSAA, but the first since 2007 when they won bronze. The team also qualified in 2006 and 1992.

The Flames, ranked #5 in the 16 team tournament, will be playing in Pool C against St. Mary’s Crusaders, (Hamilton) Widdifield Wildcats (North Bay) and Dryden Eagles.

Campbellford plays Widdifield in its opening game March 21, at 9 a.m. followed by Dryden at 7 p.m. that night and St. Mary’s at 9 a.m. the next day. The top two teams in each pool advance to the playoffs starting Wednesday night. The semifinals go Thursday morning, with the bronze game at 5 p.m. and the gold medal game at 7:15 p.m.

The team is actively fundraising now to help with the trip to Fort Frances, which is a 20 hour drive. The tournament runs the week of March 21-23.
