Belleville roofing contractor fined and given one day sentence
A Belleville roofing contractor has been fined and was issued a one-day jail sentence for failing to follow safety rules.
The Ministry of Labour says Steve Bell, the Director of Steve Bell Roofing, who had two previous convictions for safety violations, was convicted in a Belleville Court on Thursday, and besides a one-day jail sentence, he was fined $10,000.
He was charged under the Occupational Health and Safety Act with failing as an employer to ensure a worker was adequately protected from falling, even though no one fell or was injured.
The employee, by law, should have been using a travel restraint system, fall-restricting system, fall arrest system or a safety net, but a ministry inspector saw a roofer working at a house in Belleville at a height of more than 26 feet on October 7, 2015 without being protected by fall protection.
Bell had two prior convictions for the same offence, in 2013 and in 2015.
The court also imposed a 25% victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
