401 shut down in both directions by Mallorytown Road
A multi vehicle collision on Highway 401 has both lanes closed and traffic being detoured as officials scramble to deal with a toxic spill
The incident, involving multiple transports, occured in the Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township. One of the transports is leaking a toxic substance.
Both east and westbound 401 remain closed to allow for the investigation. Detours have been set up.
Gananoque Police are reporting the event has been upgraded to a HAZMAT and Mass Casualty Response. Emergency Plans have been activated.
They state one of the transports was carrying a hazardous material, which turns into hydrofluoric acid if exposed to heat, according to the Leeds Fire Department. Hydrofluoric acid is a highly toxic, highly corrosive and poisonous solution which is harmful to skin, lungs and eyes.
They report all lanes of the 401 between Lansdowne and Mallorytown are closed and likely to remain so for several hours. Traffic is being diverted to EDRs along County Road 2 and the Parkway.
They are asking that with the high traffic volume and deteriorating weather conditions, people avoid these areas if possible.
